ACCESS
840 Km from Tana on national highway (RN7, Tana > Toliara) to Ihosy/Ambainintelo then walk. Typical mission: Day 1- Tana > Ihosy by car; Day 2- Ihosy > Ambinanitelo by car and walk Ambinanitelo -Andranoheza (this village is the closest to the forest); Day 3 - walk 4-5 hours Andranoheza > forest

 

GOAL
Analavelona Forest continues to be managed effectively by local stakeholders: retaining both its cultural and biological importance.

 

VEGETATION
Island of subhumid/humid forest on basalt in subarid landscape

 

BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE
1) Habitat de Eulemur rufus, Lepilemur rufucaudatus, Pteropus rufus

2) Rare occurence of humid forest in dry southwest

3) Very high local endemism

 

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE
Traditional/cultural value as home of ancestors spirits.  Timber used for coffins.  Forest consitutes a barrier against wild fires. Source of Fiherena River.

 

THREATS
1) Wild fire;

2) Selective exploitaton of timber
